George Miller spent 14 years trying to get Fury Road made — and when he finally did, he took 150 vehicles into the Namibian desert and filmed an apocalypse for real.
Around 90% of the effects in Fury Road are practical — real vehicles, real explosions, real stunt performers flying between moving cars on bungee cords. The Doof Warrior's flame-throwing guitar was fully functional, and none of his scenes were CGI, including when it shoots fire. Cinematographer John Seale came out of retirement to shoot the film using ten cameras simultaneously to capture stunts that could only happen once. When crash cameras broke, the crew replaced them from the nearest airport shop. The film still used over 2,000 VFX shots — but almost all were invisible enhancements rather than replacements: removing cables, sharpening skies, extending canyon walls. The canyon sequence, which most viewers assume was shot on location, was digitally made significantly taller and narrower in post. Almost nobody notices. Fury Road won six Oscars, all in below-the-line technical categories — the Academy's way of acknowledging that the craft was more impressive than the story.
Miller originally planned to make Fury Road in 2001 with Mel Gibson. September 11 caused the dollar to collapse against the Australian dollar, the budget ballooned, and the film was shelved for 14 years. The wait probably made it better.
