What should the Steelers do at QB? |

An Unsettled QB Room In Pittsburgh |
What Happened: Peruse the depth charts around the NFL and most teams seem to have a clear plan at quarterback. Some teams have no-doubt number-one options; others are headed towards training camp competitions based on the look of their current rosters. And of course, we are just waiting to pencil in Fernando Mendoza as the Raiders’ QB1.
One team sticks out like a sore thumb, though. What exactly are the Pittsburgh Steelers doing? |
Why You Care: Perhaps the better question is why, though. After all, we know that the Steelers have essentially put their offseason plans in Aaron Rodgers’ hands. How could that possibly backfire?
Already this offseason, we’ve seen Kirk Cousins, Daniel Jones, Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa, Geno Smith, and Malik Willis become available in some form. Pittsburgh wasn’t able to, or wasn’t interested in landing any of those veteran options as it lets Rodgers take his sweet time deciding if he’ll be back in 2026.
With former coach Mike McCarthy taking over for Mike Tomlin, the Steelers front office must feel pretty good about the prospects of Rodgers returning. Because they have no viable plan B, and there aren’t any good ones still out there.
If Rodgers does decide to hang em up, where do the Steelers turn? Mason Rudolph is the only veteran option on the roster, and if any team knows the low ceiling that putting Rudolph under center creates, it’s the Steelers. Russell Wilson is still available in free agency — sorry, thought you could use a laugh.
Would McCarthy be willing to roll the dice with sixth-round draft pick Will Howard for a season? If he is, the Terrible Towel wavers need to familiarize themselves with a foreign concept called “a losing season.” Outside of Mendoza, most draft pundits don’t see a QB worthy of a first-round selection. Drafting and starting someone such as Ty Simpson doesn’t mesh with how the Steelers operate. (Kenny Pickett started at QB as a rookie, but that was after 49 college starts; Simpson has made 15.)
Finally, why put your plans on hold for Rodgers to begin with? Anyone could’ve identified the black and yellow as a team that could maybe sneak into the playoffs without presenting as a real threat to make noise last season, and that’s exactly how it played out. Whatever production bump Rodgers might get from being reunited with McCarthy will be offset by the former Packer and Jet being another year older, less mobile, and more skittish in the pocket. I’m not saying the team needed to throw a Hail Mary on its QB decision this offseason, but doing the equivalent of taking a knee doesn’t make a whole lot of sense either. |

Baseball violence!
Yesterday we were all waiting anxiously after Boston Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras dared the Milwaukee Brewers to throw inside on him. Didn’t happen, but Atlanta and Los Angeles stepped up and delivered the bench-clearing brawl we were all craving last night, even though no batters were hit!
Taking exception to a pitch he thought was too high and too inside, Jorge Soler of the Angels charged at Atlanta’s Reynaldo Lopez and the two kinda swatted at each other from there. Players from both teams did the thing where they sprinted out of the dugout and then just stood around. Relief pitchers went for a jog from the bullpen with no true purpose. Standard stuff.
Atlanta versus the Angels. What a strange sight. These teams have no history together, no real chance to build up much bad blood. A sorta random brouhaha, but we’ll take it while we wait for Contreras to exact his revenge. |
Who were you rooting for last night? |
