Trout Hits IL, Trade Chances Vanish |
What Happened: Mike Trout was Officially Back. It was nice while it lasted, wasn’t it? |
Why You Care: For the 2026 season, Mike Trout currently ranks 29th in WAR by Baseball Reference. For much of his career, suggesting there were 28 players better than Trout in MLB would've been insulting. Now, it's kind of astonishing.
Trout’s first eight full MLB seasons stack up with the all-time greats, and eclipses many of them. He was a true do-it-all player, hitting for average and power while playing above-average defense in the outfield and efficiently stealing bases. Tragically, injuries took their toll, and Trout has averaged less than a half a season played over the last five campaigns. When he has played, he hasn’t looked like his old self, attempting to play through various injuries without much success.
But the start of 2026 was different. Trout looked like his vintage self, slugging 17 home runs and leading all of MLB in runs scored. Guess what happened next?
Trout is headed back to the injured list with a hamstring injury. Any sports fan can tell you hamstring injuries tend to linger, with setbacks close to the norm during recovery. Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers injured his hamstring on April 2nd and never took the court again this season, missing the Lakers' entire playoff run.
For baseball fans, Trout’s injury is a bummer. Same old song, and with the potential to ruin what looked like one hell of a bounceback season. For LA Angels fans, there might be another regret: did the Angels miss their window to trade Trout?
As Trout’s resurgence played out, plenty of MLB scribes floated the idea of the Angels using their franchise player’s hot start to sell while they could. In the past, Trout had shown no inclination to bail on Anaheim, but perhaps all that losing finally got to him? From the team’s side, who could blame the front office for wanting to get out of a contract that runs through 2030 with an average salary north of $37 million?
The Angels wouldn’t get much back in a trade, and would have to send some (or, a lot of) cash to any team willing to take on Trout. But still, a clean break might’ve been good for all involved. Now, Trout is nursing a hamstring injury and who knows when he’ll be back in the lineup? I suspect that it will be long enough that any team contemplating a trade for the future Hall of Famer will no longer be interested. For better or worse, Trout and the Angels remain stuck together. |

Sauce Gardner’s age. Seriously, what the hell?
While talking with reporters, the Colts cornerback was talking about being a veteran leader, even at his age. Which is…? "I'm 24, by the way," Sauce informed said reporters. News to basically the entire NFL, as Gardner has always been listed with an August 31st, 2000 birthday. He now says that actually, he was born in 2001. For what it's worth, the Colts' website had it correct.
Is this some weird eligibility scam that went too far? How does someone as famous and with his biographical information splashed around as much as Sauce’s is just adopt a wrong birthday? How does that start?
I’d accuse the star cornerback of foul play, but I don’t even know what the angle would be. Sometimes, I guess weird stuff in sports just happens. |
