Spurs Crash Out As Knicks Move Closer To Title

What Happened: San Antonio collapsed in epic fashion last night, blowing a 29-point lead in an eventual loss to the Knicks to fall behind 3-1 in the NBA Finals. The worrying part? The Spurs are being let down by veterans and youngsters alike.

Why You Care: When the Spurs erased a 3-2 series deficit against the Thunder to advance to the NBA Finals, it felt like a young team making the leap in front of our eyes. Plenty of experts scheduled the Thunder for a return trip after a title-winning 2024-25, but Victor Wembanyama and Co. decided against waiting their turn and fast-forwarded to competing for a title.

With a lineup that relies so heavily on Wembanyama (22 years old), Stephon Castle (21), and Dylan Harper (20), the lack of experience always loomed as a potential stumbling block. So often in sports we hear that teams have to learn to lose on the biggest stages before they can conquer them.

So it's been no surprise that a feral Madison Square Garden is taking its toll on the youth. Castle made zero field goals in the second half last night. Harper had more turnovers (3) than shots made (2). Wemby shot 3-for-14 from the field after going 6-of-11 in the first half. As the Knicks chipped away at a double-digit lead, the young guys had no answers.

The most worrying part of last night for the Spurs though might be De’Aaron Fox’s performance as the game slipped away. A bad pass with two minutes and San Antonio clinging to a one-point lead gifted Josh Hart a layup (that he missed.) In an incredibly ill-fated choice, Fox retrieved a loose ball in the Spurs’ backcourt with 12 seconds to play, and instead of drawing a foul or running out some clock, the veteran guard went up for a layup attempt that OG Anunoby rejected.

It somehow got worse. On Jalen Brunson’s deep 3-pointer, Fox abandoned Anunoby to help contest a shot from 31 feet away from the hoop and failed to box out Anunoby and…well, you know what happened next. Fox ended the second half 2-of-8 shooting and four turnovers.

Acquiring him from the Sacramento Kings was supposed to provide some leadership to a team long on talent but short on experience. With the season on the line, Fox caved to the pressure like his younger teammates did. On the brink of elimination, who do the Spurs turn to now?
