The DOJ announced this week it is moving to strip citizenship from 17 naturalized Americans — sex offenders, fraudsters, and drug dealers who allegedly lied on their applications. At least 300 more foreign-born citizens are currently being targeted. The Trump administration calls it the highest volume of denaturalization cases in US history.

Denaturalization has always existed — historically used against war criminals and Nazis who concealed their pasts. What's different now is the scale, the speed, and the scope. The June DOJ memo directs prosecutors to "maximally pursue" cases involving anyone who "poses a potential danger to national security" — language legal experts say is broad enough to cover almost anyone.

The 17 cases announced this week involve people who genuinely lied to become citizens. The 300 behind them are a different question entirely.
