On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people in the state were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two and a half years earlier, but enforcement had not yet reached the most remote corner of the Confederacy. For roughly 250,000 enslaved Texans, June 19 was the day freedom became real.

Juneteenth — the name a portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth" — has been celebrated by Black Americans since 1866, making it one of the oldest African American holidays in the country. In 2021, after generations of grassroots commemoration, it became the eleventh federal holiday in the United States. It is a day of remembrance, of family, of music and food, and of honoring how freedom finally arrived — and how the work isn't finished.
