Brunson’s 4th Quarter Heroics Lift Knicks To Game 1 Win |
What Happened: By stealing Game 1 on the road, the New York Knicks now have history on their side. But we’ve seen San Antonio respond this postseason. |
Why You Care: Win Game 1 and the title is yours. At least that’s what NBA history tells us — the team that wins the opener of the Finals is 55-24 for a 70% winning percentage. The reason the Knicks are in this advantageous position and the Spurs are playing catch-up already? How each team’s star player down the stretch.
The game’s first three quarters were ugly for Jalen Brunson. The southpaw shot 7-for-22 from the field, including a brutal 1-of-8 from deep. At one point, Brunson was forced to head to the locker room to get his knee checked out and got his ankle stepped on by 7’1”, 250-lb. Luke Kornet. The Knicks star was getting bumped around physically and it seemed to be effecting his shooting touch.
The fourth quarter? A different story. Brunson erupted in the game's final frame, netting 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Of course, when it mattered most Brunson had the ball in his hands and made it count. Brunson buried a three-pointer just past the 2:00 minute mark to give the Knicks a two-point lead. It was time for the Spurs to answer. It did not go well.
Victor Wembanyama capped off a poor performance by losing the ball with under a minute to play and his team down four points, following free throws from Mikal Bridges. With Karl-Anthony Towns looking to avoid a fifth foul, Wemby needed to be aggressive, to attack his defender and get to the rim. Instead, he dribbled the ball off his foot and turned it over. One mid-range jumper from Brunson later, the Knicks were up six with a half a minute to play. Game over.
Neither Wemby nor Brunson had a very good game. But Brunson was able to shake off all those early misses and ice the game when the opportunity arose. Wemby ended up 6-of-21 shooting (2-of-9 from deep) and racked up a game-high six turnovers. Defensively he affected plenty of shots, but Towns, his main defensive assignment, shot almost 50% from the field on his way to 18 points. Josh Hart somehow pulled down 15 rebounds. Wemby simply didn't impact the game the way he needed to.
His supporting cast didn’t step up either. Julian Champagnie nailed five 3s on six attempts in the game’s first half, then went 0-for-4 the rest of the way. Devin Vassell, De’Aaron Fox, and Dylan Harper combined for 11 second-half points.OG Anunoby, New York’s third option, had 12 by himself.
The Knicks’ depth shined long enough to let their star shooter close out the game, while San Antonio’s cast wilted around its leader. Jalen Brunson could be better this series, but Victor Wembanyama needs to be if the Spurs are going to even things up. |

A.J. Brown’s knee, which doesn’t sound like it’s in great shape.
Eliot Wolf, the Patriots' GM even if they won't call him that, confirmed that Brown, his shiny new trade acquisition, has a "degenerative knee condition" that the team isn't too worried about.
So Brown, who will be 29 years old for the 2026 season and just posted his lowest yardage total since an injury-shortened 2021 with the Titans, has a knee issue that’s basically guaranteed to get worse? Gee, I wonder why the Eagles were so eager to ship him out of town and draft a replacement for their star receiver. |
