| YOUR TAX DOLLARS. THEIR ADVENTURE. FAIR? |
Four climbers fell near Denali Pass on America's highest mountain this week, stranded at 18,200 feet. Three teammates made it back to High Camp. Rescue rangers couldn't reach the fallen climbers for days because of weather. A Denali rescue operation costs between $10,000 and $30,000 in federal resources. The climbers pay nothing. Denali sees roughly 1,000 climbers a year. The National Park Service runs one of the most sophisticated high-altitude rescue programs in the world — funded entirely by taxpayers. Climbers pay a $425 permit fee. The average rescue costs 30 times that. And every year, people who knew the risks, signed the waivers, and went anyway end up needing the government to come get them. Nobody wants four people to die on a mountain. The question is who should pay for the decision that put them there. |
| POSITION A: They Chose This |
| Climbing Denali requires months of planning, thousands of dollars, and signing a waiver that lists exactly how you might die. When that bet goes wrong at 18,200 feet, the people who never left sea level shouldn't be the ones paying to clean it up. Charge them for the rescue or require insurance. The permit fee is $425. The rescue costs $30,000. |
| POSITION B: We Don't Let People Die |
| We rescue people from floods they chose to live near, car crashes from roads they chose to drive, and overdoses from drugs they chose to take — and we don't send them a bill. Deciding whose life is worth saving based on the choices that got them there is a line most people only want to draw for someone else's emergency. |
