| ARE DOCTORS FAILING WOMEN? |
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the US. Women are seven times more likely than men to be sent home from the ER with an anxiety diagnosis when they're actually having a heart attack. Women are 50% more likely to be misdiagnosed after a heart attack overall. Younger women and women of color face even higher rates. Part of the problem is real: women's cardiac symptoms genuinely look different. Instead of crushing chest pain, they get fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and a sense of dread — symptoms that overlap almost perfectly with anxiety and panic attacks. Most cardiac research for decades was conducted on men. Doctors are pattern-matching against a template that was never built for women. The symptoms are ambiguous. The outcomes aren't. Women who are misdiagnosed get sicker, suffer more heart damage, and die at higher rates. At some point ambiguity becomes a pattern, and patterns become negligence. |
