Rodgers Back For 2026 Season; What It Means For Pittsburgh |
What Happened: Relief is the word that comes to mind when hearing that Aaron Rodgers has confirmed 2026 will be his last season in the NFL. The next eight months will provide plenty of opportunity to shower the future Hall of Famer with praise, but this offseason dance has become exhausting. At least Matthew Stafford has the good manners to not be a total weirdo and so diva-esque when doing his annual episode of "will he or won't he."
So, we know (or are pretty sure) that this is it for Rodgers. Now the question becomes — will he be riding off in a blaze of glory? |
Why You Care: The AFC North is not the best division in football by a long shot. But after this offseason, it’s among the more intriguing. Seeing the Steelers and an institution like Mike Tomlin go their separate ways is a big deal; having it happen in Baltimore with John Harbaugh in the same offseason is fascinating. Sorry Cleveland, but I don’t find anything the Browns are doing all that interesting yet.
As I wrote earlier this offseason, I think the stability in Cincinnati does give it an edge in the new North. Almost everything the Bengals do hinges on the health of Joe Burrow, but with some upgrades on the defense, this team could be in a position to take the divisional crown.
What’s the case for Rodgers putting together one more successful campaign before he hangs up his cleats? You’d have to have a lot of faith that he and Mike McCarthy get back on the same page and fast. The former Packers and Cowboys coach wasn’t the most exciting hire, but he did win 12 games in three consecutive seasons in Dallas before a 7-10 in 2025 got him canned.
The problem is, McCarthy is getting a version of Rodgers that doesn't resemble the one he enjoyed success with all those years ago. There won't be any on the move heaves 60 yards down the field anymore. No "how'd he do that?" escapes from the pocket to extend plays and demoralize a defense. Rodgers wilts when he feels the pressure coming now. He can't move within the pocket. Last season often resembled a game of hot potato, with the former gunslinger eager to dump the ball off to a running back before plays developed. An astounding number of his throws didn't even extend beyond the line of scrimmage.
Soon enough, Rodgers will get his accolades and his gold jacket. Watching his highlights will drop the jaw. Listening to his speech in Canton will be exhausting. But for now, I think the Steelers are going to miss some of that Mike Tomlin magic, especially when adversity makes its first appearance of the season. Things feel rickety in the Steel City, an apt descriptor for how Rodgers looked last season as well. He’s back in black and gold for one more season. I don’t think he’s getting a fairytale ending out of it. |

Keep An Eye On... |
How the Cleveland Cavaliers respond tonight in Game 2 against the Knicks.
Was blowing a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter of Game 1 deflating enough to Cleveland’s confidence that this series is all but over already? Or did it prove to the Cavs they can hang with a team that looks like Finals material and needed overtime in Game 1 at home just to earn a victory?
Expect to see a lot of Donovan Mitchell down the stretch after he put up an 0-fer in the overtime period and missed his last five shot attempts of Game 1. Your best player cannot shrink when the game tightens, and Mitchell will need to bounce back tonight with a big performance, even if it comes in a loss. If Cleveland is going to get back into this series, it will be Mitchell who leads the way.
