“Inspiration is for amateurs — the rest of us just show up and get to work.” — Chuck Close
Chuck Close (1940-2021) was an American painter and photographer known for his monumental photorealist portraits — works of extraordinary detail that could span eight or nine feet. In 1988, a spinal artery collapse left him almost entirely paralyzed. He taught himself to paint by strapping a brush to his wrist, eventually developing a distinctive grid-based technique that turned each canvas into a system of thousands of small abstract marks that resolved into a face when viewed from a distance. He continued producing major work for more than thirty years after his paralysis, becoming one of the most recognized American painters of his generation. His output was prodigious. He had a schedule. He showed up.

Context Close said this in various interviews over the course of his career, and it became perhaps his most-repeated observation — not because it was motivational but because it was accurate and a little uncomfortable. The line draws a clean distinction not between talented and untalented people but between people who have built a practice and people who are still waiting for the right feeling to begin. Close's own history makes the point inescapable: after his paralysis, waiting for inspiration was not a viable option. He had to develop a system, a method, a way of generating work regardless of how he felt on any given day. The grid technique he invented was partly a physical necessity and partly a philosophical position — an argument, in paint, that art does not require a special state of readiness. It requires showing up, dividing the work into manageable units, and putting one mark down after another until the whole appears. That is available to anyone with a practice. |
