Not surrender. Not passivity. Something harder and more freeing than either.

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” — Alan Watts
Alan Watts (1915-1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker who became one of the most influential interpreters of Eastern philosophy for Western audiences. He wrote more than twenty-five books on Zen Buddhism, Taoism, and Hindu philosophy, and his radio broadcasts and lectures — later released as recordings — found enormous audiences in the 1960s and 1970s. Watts was not a practicing Buddhist or meditator in the traditional sense but rather a philosophical entertainer, as he called himself, whose gift was making the principles of Eastern thought feel genuinely accessible and urgently relevant to ordinary Western life.

Context Watts wrote and spoke extensively about what he saw as the central mistake of the Western mind: the belief that the self is a fixed, separate entity that can and should control its environment, including the passage of time and the reality of change. His argument was not that you should give up or become passive. It was that the effort to resist change — to hold on, to freeze things, to insist on permanence — produces precisely the suffering and disorientation that people are trying to avoid. The dance metaphor is deliberate: dancing is not passive, but it does require following the music rather than fighting it. Watts drew on Taoism and Zen for this insight, particularly the concept of wu wei — effortless action, moving with rather than against the nature of things. The result he described was not resignation but a particular kind of aliveness: the ease of someone who has stopped fighting a current and started swimming in it. |
