DARK COMEDY SCI-FI THRILLER SATIRE
|
✦ ✦ ✦
Two conspiracy-obsessed men in beekeeper suits kidnap a pharmaceutical CEO because they're convinced she's an alien sent to destroy Earth. She might be.
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone's fourth collaboration is their most propulsive and perhaps their most audacious — a genre-hopping dark comedy that tears through conspiracy culture, corporate greed, and paranoia with gleeful nastiness. Stone plays Michelle Fuller, the kidnapped CEO, with a coiled intensity that's entirely different from anything she's done with Lanthimos before. But it's Jesse Plemons who walks away with the film — his portrait of a true believer is both deeply funny and genuinely unsettling. The film is sharp, strange, and moves at a relentless clip. Some critics found the ending divisive and the violence occasionally gratuitous, and fair-weather Lanthimos fans may find this one harder to warm to than Poor Things. For everyone else, it's exactly the kind of film nobody else is making.
Weird, funny, and uncomfortably relevant. If you're already a Lanthimos fan this is essential — if you're new to him, Poor Things is the better entry point, but this isn't far behind. Now streaming on Peacock.
