LIV Golf, Flag Football Funding In Danger |
What Happened: When Saudi Arabia decided to splash some cash around in the hopes of boosting its profile in the entertainment sector, and oh yeah, to make people forget about all those pesky human rights violations, some of the most famous names in sports eagerly put their hands out.
Would you believe me if I told you that maybe that wasn’t such a great idea? |
Why You Care: Saudi’s big gamble of course was investing in Greg Norman’s would-be competitor to the PGA Tour, LIV Golf. For years, Norman was fixated on trying to break the PGA’s dominance in professional golf, and with all that Saudi money, LIV Golf was able to convince some of the world’s best golfers to join the breakaway league.
LIV Golf promised to be a fun alternative to the stuffy PGA, featuring team play, shotgun starts, and a louder, more loose atmosphere featuring live music and encouraged crowd engagement. Did that work? Who knows, no one was watching! LIV struggled to gain a foothold in America, with low TV ratings and little commercial revenue. In a major sign of failure, both Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed bailed on LIV earlier this year to re-join the PGA, even at great personal financial cost.
At least LIV Golf felt like a legitimate threat to the PGA Tour for a stretch as it siphoned real talent from its nominal rival and grabbed headlines. The other big sports investment Saudi made in the U.S., something called Fanatics Flag Football Classic, was a complete non-entity from the start. Despite roping in names such as Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, this flag football league never had any juice with American audiences. Even with the NFL eager to prioritize flag football due to its inclusion in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, a major investment from Saudi’s General Entertainment Authority couldn’t move the needle.
Rumors are swirling that the money for both of these leagues is set to dry up because of turmoil in the Middle East. For those keeping track at home, that’s two sports leagues, several of the biggest names in sports, and several billions of dollars spent so far. This Saudi sportswashing tour would likely continue full steam ahead were it not for the ongoing war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Perhaps when the conflict is over, the checkbook will come back out.
In the meantime, these athletes and executives can step back from these failed ventures, ponder why Saudi Arabia didn’t flinch throwing billions of dollars their way, and re-calculate if being used as a pawn by this murderous regime is a worthy trade-off. |

Yeah, they probably aren’t. A 35-point performance from Steph Curry helped lift the Warriors past the Clippers last night in the play-in tournament’s #9 vs. #10 matchup, setting up a date with the Phoenix Suns tomorrow. Knock off the Suns, and Curry and Co. get a chance at…the Oklahoma City Thunder. That would be a juicy matchup if we were talking the 2015-17 Warriors. But any team that escapes the play-in is doing so only for the right to get vaporized by the Thunder, probably in four games. |
