Two powerhouse actresses, one brutal frontier, and a behind-the-scenes departure that derailed the whole thing.
Set in 1850s Washington Territory, The Abandons pits Lena Headey's scrappy Irish matriarch against Gillian Anderson's calculating silver mine owner in a battle over land and survival. The premise is genuinely compelling, and both leads commit fully — Headey is rough-edged and watchable, and Anderson brings cold authority to every scene. The problem is the writing. Creator Kurt Sutter departed mid-production over creative differences, and the seams show: the series struggles to sustain narrative momentum across its seven episodes, with wildly uneven runtimes and characters that never quite get the depth they deserve. It's a show that had real potential — a female-led frontier drama with serious pedigree — that got away from itself before it could fully arrive. Netflix cancelled it after one season, leaving the story unresolved.
Worth watching for Headey and Anderson alone, but go in knowing there's no resolution coming. Stream it on Netflix.
