Twenty-eight years into the Rage Virus apocalypse, the infected are no longer the most terrifying thing out there.
Nia DaCosta's sequel shifts the franchise into darker, stranger territory — less zombie horror, more folk horror cult nightmare. Ralph Fiennes is extraordinary as Dr. Kelson, a quietly devoted man building an ossuary for the dead while forming an unlikely bond with an Alpha infected named Samson. Jack O'Connell is genuinely unsettling as the satanic cult leader Jimmy Crystal, whose gang of "Fingers" poses a human threat far more disturbing than the infected. Hildur Guðnadóttir's score — ranging from quasi-ecclesiastical to gut-churning — is one of the film's great assets. The biggest caveat is that it functions best as the middle chapter of a trilogy rather than a standalone film; viewers coming in cold will feel the seams. But for those already invested in the world, it's the highest-rated entry in the franchise's history.
