Announcing our 2020 international trips

Dear readers,

Sometimes I'm asked what makes Atlas Obscura trips unique. The answer is always easy: It's the people.

It's local expert Felicity Roberts, who teaches us about
Newfoundland's fish-kissing rite of passage, called a Screech-In. It's architectural researcher Darmon Richter, who leads us to otherworldly monuments in Eastern Europe, describing the work he's doing to help preserve them across the region. And perhaps above all, it's the open minds, inquisitive spirits, and easy-going attitudes of our travelers, ready to embrace the unknown and unexpected. Atlas Obscura brings together talented and curious people with special knowledge and ambitious ideas to create an original trip you'll find nowhere else.

Today I'm excited to announce our 2020 lineup of international trips. Along with our expert guides, we'll host 150 trips to 40 countries next year.

In Uganda, we'll examine the complex history of colonial explorers' obsessive search for the source of the Nile. In Naples, we'll introduce you to the man in the market who sells aspirin by the pill and a tried-and-true hangover cure. In Turkmenistan, we'll sleep near the edge of a perpetually burning crater known as the Gates of Hell. And we'll go deep into the jungles of Borneo with an international team of researchers, where you'll test your hand at climbing trees, trapping bugs, and discovering new species.

Take a look at our full lineup and let me know what you think. There are few things I'm more excited to talk about than these trips and the community who brings them to life.
