SLC Punk started as a one-man show James Merendino performed himself. By the time it became a film, it had Matthew Lillard, an 18-day shoot, and a craft services budget that was mostly Domino's.
James Merendino wrote and directed SLC Punk based on his own experiences growing up punk in Salt Lake City in the 1980s — a place so aggressively conformist that rebellion had to be louder and more deliberate than anywhere else. The film was shot in 18 days on approximately $1.5 million, much of which Merendino scraped together through investor loans and personal debt. Matthew Lillard, coming off Scream, took the lead role for a fraction of his going rate because he believed in the script. The cast and crew were paid in deferred wages and, famously, pizza. The film premiered at Sundance in 1998, was picked up for distribution, and opened to modest box office but immediate cult word-of-mouth. The soundtrack — assembled by Merendino himself and featuring TSOL, Dead Kennedys, and The Stooges — became as important to the film's identity as anything on screen, at a time when licensing punk music for film was cheaper than it would ever be again.
A sequel, SLC Punk 2: Punk's Dead, was released in 2016. The budget was larger. The cast was paid in actual money.
