Texans Set Deadline For Stroud Extension Talks

The Houston Texans are applying pressure to their franchise quarterback in their contract standoff.

In comments made on Tuesday, Texans general manager Nick Caserio made it clear that the Texans will not negotiate with C.J. Stroud and his representation once the season is underway. "If we don't get it figured out before the season starts, then it'll be something we address in the offseason," Caserio affirmed.

Houston has already picked up the fifth-year option on Stroud’s contract, meaning they control his rights for at least the next two seasons. As a first-round pick from the 2023 draft, Stroud became eligible to sign an extension with the Texans this offseason, but thus far, the sides have not been able to come to terms on a deal.

I am on the record that I think the longer the Texans wait, the more money this contract extension will eventually end up costing them.

The last time we saw Stroud in action, it wasn’t a pretty sight. In a 28-16 Patriots victory in the divisional round, New England picked off four Stroud passes in the game’s first half, including a pick-six by Marcus Jones.

But Stroud also finished the regular season ranked 11th in Total QBR, besting Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, and Jared Goff among others. He's not only gotten the Texans to the playoffs in every season he's been in the NFL, he's also led them to a victory in each postseason appearance.

Stroud has had to deal with a constant shuffle along the offensive line during his time in Houston, which has produced an inefficient rushing attack that has failed to take pressure off the quarterback. Injuries to his wide receivers have also been an issue — Tank Dell has already suffered a fractured fibula (2023) as well as a catastrophic injury that involved tearing his ACL, MCL, and LCL, damaging his meniscus, and fracturing his kneecap (2024) during his NFL career. Stefon Diggs’ tenure with Houston lasted just eight games due to injury, and the team has already lost Jayden Higgins to a torn ACL during training camp. Dell will also begin the season on the injured reserve.

While Stroud’s been up and down since his historic rookie season, I think he’s comfortably a better-than-average QB in the NFL. With a little more help in Year 2 of offensive coordinator Nick Caley’s system, Stroud could easily find himself as one of the game’s 10 best QBs. If he gets even close to that, his price will rise accordingly.

The Texans are daring Stroud to bet on himself here. I think he’ll do just that, and be much richer as a result.
