There was no digital gap and no miniature model waiting in a effects bay. When that bus goes airborne, it's because a real bus actually left the ground.
The production built a genuine unfinished section of elevated freeway specifically for the stunt, then used a specially reinforced bus launched at speed to make the jump, capturing the sequence with multiple cameras positioned around the landing zone. Stunt coordinators calculated the jump using real physics rather than adjusting the shot digitally afterward, a choice consistent with the film's overall approach of favoring practical stunt work throughout its many action sequences involving the bus at speed. Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, both relatively unproven as action leads at the time, performed significant portions of their own stunt driving and physical work under the guidance of the stunt team. The film's success helped establish both actors as viable action leads and became a template for the tightly contained, single location premise style of action filmmaking that followed it throughout the 1990s.
The freeway used for the jump sequence was a real, still under construction section of Los Angeles highway, cleared temporarily for filming before regular construction resumed.
