Hogwarts wasn't a castle. It wasn't a location. It was an aircraft factory in Hertfordshire — and production designer Stuart Craig turned it into the most recognisable school in cinema history.
The entire Harry Potter series was shot at Leavesden Studios — a former World War II aerodrome that the production team discovered abandoned and converted into a working film studio. Over ten years, production designer Stuart Craig and his team built 588 individual sets, each constructed from real stone, wood, and hand-painted finishes, because they needed to film scenes years apart without rebuilding anything. The Great Hall was the first set built in 2000 and was still standing for the final film in 2010. The sweeping exterior shots of Hogwarts castle were never a real location — they were a 1:24 scale model, nearly 50 feet in diameter, with 2,500 fibre optic lights, real landscaping, miniature hinged doors, and tiny birds in the Owlery. During filming of Deathly Hallows Part 2, a fire broke out on one of the sets. Only a small section was damaged. They kept filming.
When production wrapped in 2010, Warner Bros. bought Leavesden Studios outright, invested £100 million in the site, and converted it into a permanent public exhibition. The Studio Tour has been rated the highest attraction in the world on TripAdvisor every year since it opened in 2012.
