Alfred Hitchcock spent more time filming the shower scene than any other sequence in Psycho — seven days for 45 seconds of finished film. The actress in it was told it would be a minor scene.
Janet Leigh was never told the shower scene would become the centerpiece of the film. When she arrived on set, she was given the breakdown: 70 camera setups, seven days of shooting, chocolate syrup standing in for blood because the film was in black and white. Hitchcock was about to kill his leading lady 47 minutes into the movie — something that simply was not done. The scene was storyboarded by Saul Bass, the graphic designer behind the title sequence, who mapped every single cut. Hitchcock's direction was so precise that he used a stand-in for many shots — Leigh appears in far fewer frames than most people assume. The famous shot looking up at the shower head was filmed with a fixed camera and no water actually hitting the lens. The stabbing motions never make contact — there is not a single frame where the knife touches skin. Bernard Herrmann's score, the shrieking strings now synonymous with the scene, was added in post. Hitchcock had originally intended the scene to play in silence. He heard Herrmann's composition, changed his mind immediately, and doubled the composer's salary on the spot.
Leigh later said the scene genuinely traumatised her. She never took a shower again for the rest of her life — baths only, door unlocked, curtain open.
