Christopher Nolan Refused to Use CGI for a Single Aerial Shot

Christopher Nolan had one rule for filming Dunkirk: if it existed in 1940, it had to exist on set in 2016.

◆   ◆   ◆

The Spitfires were real. The ships were real. The 300,000 extras were not — but almost everything else was.

Christopher Nolan shot Dunkirk on 70mm and IMAX film — cameras so large and heavy that mounting them inside a Spitfire cockpit required completely custom rigging. The production tracked down three airworthy Spitfires and coordinated with the French Navy to use actual WWII-era vessels. The minesweeper HMS Medusa had actually participated in the original evacuation in 1940. Nolan negotiated for months to film on the real Dunkirk beach, shooting during a narrow window when tides and light matched late May 1940. The crowd scenes filmed the same extras multiple times from different angles and composited them together. Hans Zimmer's entire score was built around a ticking watch Nolan handed him at the start of production.

Nolan shot the film without a traditional screenplay — instead working from a 76-page document with almost no dialogue. He has said it is the most personal film he has ever made.

✦ Did You Know?

The Spitfire pilots who flew for the production were not stunt pilots — they were historic aircraft specialists. Several had been flying Spitfires for longer than some of the film's cast members had been alive.
