Orson Welles made Citizen Kane at 25. By 26, Hollywood had effectively decided he was too much trouble to employ.
The film was The Other Side of the Wind — a movie about a Hollywood director making a comeback film while a documentary crew follows him around. Welles shot it in fragments across fifteen years, from 1970 to 1985, using whatever money he could find, whatever cast members were available, and whatever locations would have him. He shot in the United States, France, and Spain. He paid for much of it himself, supplemented by a loan from his friend the Shah of Iran's brother-in-law, which meant that when the Iranian Revolution happened in 1979, the negative was impounded in a Paris vault as an asset of the Iranian government. It sat there for decades. Welles died in 1985 with the film unfinished. He left behind over a thousand hours of footage. It took until 2018 — 33 years after his death — for a team of editors, using Welles's own notes and a legal settlement with the Iranian government, to finally complete it. The film premiered on Netflix. It was exactly as strange and brilliant as you'd expect from a man who had been making it in secret for fifteen years.
Between Kane and The Other Side of the Wind, Welles acted in other people's films constantly — not because he wanted to, but because it was the only way to fund his own projects. He appeared in over 60 films as an actor. Almost every paycheck went directly into whatever he was shooting.
