Jim Carrey had been doing Ace Ventura — the walk, the voice, the hair — in his stand-up act for years before anyone put him in a film. Warner Bros. did not know what to do with him.
The character of Ace Ventura existed in Carrey's stand-up long before the film was greenlit — a fully formed creation he had been refining for years. When the script landed at Warner Bros., it was described internally as too weird to work. Carrey rewrote significant portions himself, inserting bits he had been doing live. The studio gave the film a budget of $15 million and essentially let Carrey and director Tom Shadyac do whatever they wanted because nobody senior enough cared to interfere. Carrey prepared by spending time with real animals, including a cheetah that bit him during rehearsals. The tutu scene was entirely improvised. So was most of the talking-through-the-backside bit, which Carrey performed to a crew who were reportedly crying with laughter and completely unable to keep filming. The film opened to poor reviews — Roger Ebert gave it one star — and made $107 million worldwide.
Carrey was paid $350,000 for Ace Ventura. By the time the sequel came out, his asking price was $20 million per film — the highest in Hollywood at the time.
