He Invented Cary Grant From Scratch — and Nobody Noticed

Archibald Leach was born in poverty in Bristol, told his mother was dead, and became the most sophisticated man in Hollywood. He did it entirely on purpose.

◆   ◆   ◆

Archibald Leach was nine years old when his father had his mother committed to a psychiatric institution. He was told she had gone away. He wouldn't find out she was alive for another twenty years — by which point he had become someone else entirely.

At fourteen, Leach joined an acrobatic troupe and sailed to America — initially just for a tour, but he never went back. The physical training is why Cary Grant always looked so at ease on screen: it was rehearsed, not natural. The accent — that mid-Atlantic drawl that sounds neither English nor American — he constructed himself. When Hollywood asked him to change his name, he chose "Cary" from a stage role and "Grant" from a studio list. He spent years living with Randolph Scott in a beach house arrangement Hollywood chose to find charming rather than suspicious. For twelve years he took legal LSD in therapy sessions, crediting them with finally helping him understand himself. "I have spent the greater part of my life fluctuating between Archie Leach and Cary Grant," he said, "unsure of either."

He was never nominated for a competitive Academy Award for any specific performance. He received an honorary Oscar in 1970. In his acceptance speech, he thanked "all the people who have made this possible — especially Archie Leach."

✦ Did You Know?

His mother Elsie, whom he had believed dead for over twenty years, was still alive and living in the institution when he finally found her. He brought her to Hollywood, set her up comfortably, and visited regularly until her death. He never spoke about it publicly.
