THREE YEARS — OREGON MAN SENTENCED FOR LIVING IN FAMILY'S CRAWLSPACE FOR MONTHS WITHOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE
For nearly three months, a married couple and their young daughter lived their daily lives in their Happy Valley, Oregon townhome with no idea anyone else was there. Below their floors, Beniamin Bucur, 41, had built himself a life. String lights. A kitchen. A gaming area with multiple televisions and consoles. A network of power cords tapped into the home's electrical system — a bill the family unknowingly paid. He came and went through the crawlspace entrance while they slept. They never heard a thing.
On September 3, 2025, a neighbor spotted someone slipping into the crawlspace and called police. Deputies responded, got permission from the homeowners, and pried open the crawlspace door. Inside they found Bucur — a complete stranger to the family — along with knives, a sword, and a pipe containing methamphetamine residue. The family said they had noticed some food going missing and heard occasional strange noises, but had no idea the source was a man living feet beneath them.
Bucur was convicted of first-degree burglary on May 27 after a jury deliberated for approximately 20 minutes. He had previously pleaded guilty to methamphetamine possession before trial. He was sentenced to 36 months in prison. Deputy DA Tiffany Escovar summed it up simply: "For two and a half months, Beniamin Bucur was the roommate the family never knew they had." He also faces additional burglary charges in Washington County for a separate incident that occurred while he was on supervised release in this case.
