ATTEMPTED MURDER — OREGON MOM CHARGED AFTER ALLEGEDLY TRYING TO KILL THREE YOUNG SONS WITH CARBON MONOXIDE
Chardonnay Benavidez told her three sons they were going to have a special sleepover in the car — with popcorn. The boys, twin 2-year-olds and a 4-year-old, climbed in. Prosecutors say she had spent a week researching exactly what would happen next. A makeshift apparatus connected the car's exhaust pipe to the interior. The garage door was closed. A loaded gun sat on the seat — for herself, she later told investigators, if the carbon monoxide worked on the children but not on her.
At 8:20 p.m. on June 6, Benavidez called 911 and reported her children were falling in and out of consciousness. She told dispatchers she had tried to kill herself and her sons with carbon monoxide. When Keizer police arrived at the Holly Court home, they found all four in the living room — Benavidez had moved the boys inside after they began losing consciousness. Officers couldn't enter the attached garage until the fire department vented it. The CO levels were so high that approaching officers reported burning eyes and difficulty breathing.
All three children were taken to Salem Hospital and treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. They were medically cleared the next day and released to their father, Antonio Benavidez, who had divorced Chardonnay in 2024. When he arrived at her home to collect the boys' clothes, he found the house completely empty. She had donated everything inside before the attempt.
Benavidez was placed on a psychiatric hold and released June 7, then immediately taken into custody. She was charged with three counts of first-degree attempted murder and three counts of first-degree assault and ordered held without bail. She is next due in court June 17. Keizer police said they were unaware of any prior incidents suggesting she posed a danger to her children.
