He chose which families would uproot their lives and move to California to build a temple with him. He told one victim that refusing him would bring catastrophic consequences down on the entire Hmong community. He told a child he would beat her if she told anyone what he had done. He was their religious leader. They believed him.

Vang, 58, founded a Hmong religious organization called Kev Ntseeg Leej Niam Kee Tiam Vaj Lis Thum — loosely translated as "Belief in the Mother" — first in Wisconsin, then in Fresno, and finally in Oroville, California, where he personally selected families to relocate and build a religious community around him. The investigation began in 2024 when an 11-year-old girl and her mother disclosed years of abuse. Four additional victims came forward as the case developed. Prosecutors told the court there were more victims who were too afraid to testify.

In February 2026, a Butte County jury convicted Vang on eight counts of child molestation and three counts of rape.
