Who is the best receiving tight end in the NFL? |
|
| THE BREAKDOWN |
Falcons Betting Big On Pitts To Stay Elite |
What Happened: The Atlanta Falcons just ponied up a nice chunk of change for tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. Are they paying him off a fluky season? |
Why You Care: Atlanta drew plenty of criticism for taking Pitts out of Florida with the fourth pick of the 2021 draft. It was the highest a tight end had ever been taken in the draft, and remains the same today. Pitts was viewed as an elite weapon in the passing game, but his blocking was, to be kind, non-existent. Still, with the pros leaning into a more pass-heavy style, Pitts was seen as worth the high pick.
Has that worked out for Atlanta? It’s been a mixed bag.
If the Dirty Birds were looking to provide a jolt to their passing attack, taking Ja'Marr Chase, who was taken with the next pick by the Bengals, would've been a fine choice. Jaylen Waddle was taken with the sixth pick, DeVonta Smith came off the board at no.10, and Amon-Ra St. Brown was a steal by Detroit in the fourth round. All those guys plus Nico Collins (third round) have outproduced Pitts over their NFL careers.
But Pitts is a “tight end,” of course, and those guys are proper wide receivers. Well, the Steelers took Pat Freiermuth in the second round of the 2021 draft. Pitts has outpaced Freiermuth in receptions (284 to 261) and receiving yards (3,579 to 2,676) although the Steeler has found the end zone 22 times, whereas Pitts has just 15 times.
Since 2021, Pitts ranks fourth among all tight ends in receiving yards. But he's nowhere near the leader of the group, Travis Kelce — Pitts is closer to Sam LaPorta (who only entered the league in 2023) in 20th place on that list than he is to Kelce. The other two TEs with more yards than Pitts are George Kittle and Mark Andrews, who are both viewed as elite blocking tight ends. Pitts has improved that aspect of his game, but only to the point of being considered "below average" instead of "is that a high schooler on the field?"
Pitts’ career numbers are a bit skewed by two seasons. His debut one in the NFL, he looked like a revelation, finishing third in yards and second in catches of 20+ yards among all tight ends. Last season, he posted 928 yards and found the end zone five times. But we can’t ignore those middle seasons from 2022-2024, when Pitts didn’t break 700 yards in any season. Looking at fantasy points by position group, Pitts has finished 6th, 33rd, 13th, 15th, and 2nd in his five NFL seasons. He’s shown flashes of being an elite weapon, but he hasn’t done so consistently.
On a three-year contract with an average salary of $18 million that makes him the third-highest paid TE in the game, which Kyle Pitts Sr. will Atlanta get in 2026? Matt Ryan is calling the shots in Atlanta. When he did that from under center, he was a Falcons legend. Will he be able to live up to that reputation as a roster builder? How this Pitts deal plays out will certainly go a long way towards answering that question. |

Keep An Eye On... |
How the USMNT handles its final match of group play against Türkiye later today. The red, white, and blue are already through, and Türkiye cannot advance, so the result here is ultimately meaningless. But how coach Mauricio Pochettino sets and manages his lineup bears watching.
The big question revolves around Christian Pulisic and his calf injury. Pochettino has confirmed Pulisic will play, but for how long? Any aggravation of the injury will send USA fans into a panic.
The four Americans on yellow cards also need to be handled carefully. If any of midfielder Tyler Adams, striker Folarin Balogun, center-back Chris Richards, or left-back Antonee Robinson pick up a yellow card today, they'd earn an automatic suspension for the next game. Pochettino said taking a risk with any of them makes no sense, but injuries could always force one of them into unwanted game action. |
