Where would you rank C.J. Stroud? |

| THE BREAKDOWN |
Stroud, Texans Yet To Lock In Long Term |
What Happened: This NFL offseason has been filled with teams looking for short-term answers at the quarterback position. With only one perceived franchise quarterback available in the 2026 draft, QB-needy teams waited for veteran options to hit free agency in hopes of finding the right change-of-scenery candidate.
The Houston Texans live on the other end of that spectrum. They hit on their quarterback of the future in C.J. Stroud three years ago and the results speak for themselves. So why hasn’t Houston locked up its franchise QB on a long-term deal yet? |
Why You Care: It’s hard to argue with Stroud’s level of success through three NFL seasons, both as an individual and for the Texans as a whole. From 2020-2022, the Texans won 11 games total, bottoming out in 2022 with a 3-13-1 record. The 2022 draft landed Stroud in Houston, and the team’s fortunes shifted immediately. The Texans have not only made the playoffs in three straight seasons, but they’ve won a game in three straight postseasons as well.
The 2023 season also marked the beginning of DeMeco Ryans' tenure as head coach, and while his defenses have been strong units, Stroud isn't merely along for the ride. He finished his rookie season ranked seventh in EPA/play among all QBs, and while his 2024 play took a step back by that metric, he was again a top-10 quarterback last season. He's also been better than league average in Football Reference's ANY/A statistic in two of his three seasons. Stroud's Texans are 28-18 when he starts, the seventh-most QB wins during his time in the league.
And yet, there’s been no contract extension for the former Ohio State Buckeye. Excuse the strong language, but what gives?
The Texans have already picked up the fifth-year option on Stroud’s rookie contract, locking him in for the 2027 season. But now is the time when first-round QBs typically sign their big-money extensions. Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, and Justin Herbert all signed nine-figure extensions after three seasons in the NFL.
Will Stroud get his soon? Houston seems to be in a bit of wait-and-see mode. Which might indicate that they aren’t sold on Stroud being a top-tier guy. His poor playoff performance against New England shouldn’t cloud their judgement though. Because another trip to the postseason and another postseason win is only going to bump up the price tag on Stroud’s services even more.
It would be shocking if Ryans decided to move on in hopes of finding comparable or better quarterback play via either the draft, a trade, or free agency. The most likely resolution is Stroud being paid as a top-10 but not top-5 quarterback. Houston should pay that price now, or it can watch the market go up. |

The Victor Wembanyama revenge tour!
Wemby came back with a vengeance last night after being booted from Game 4 of the Spurs' series against the Timberwolves for throwing an elbow at Naz Reid's face. The Frenchman finished with 27 points, 17 boards, five assists, and three blocks. Throw in two 3-pointers and he's the first player in NBA postseason history to put up such a stat line.
With his size and unique abilities, we’ll end up seeing plenty of “Wemby is the first player to ever…” throughout his career. For now, he’s got San Antonio one game away from the Western Conference finals and a matchup with the Thunder, a team the Spurs beat four times in five tries during the regular season. |
