Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965) became the first Black woman to have a play produced on Broadway when A Raisin in the Sun opened in 1959. She was 29 years old. The play ran for 530 performances and won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, beating out work by Tennessee Williams and Eugene O'Neill. Hansberry died of pancreatic cancer at 34, leaving behind a body of writing that remains among the most urgent and alive in American letters.
