IS POLITICAL VIOLENCE THE NEW NORMAL?

Saturday night at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, a 31-year-old computer science teacher from California smuggled a disassembled shotgun into the Washington Hilton, rushed a Secret Service checkpoint, and opened fire. Trump, Melania, JD Vance, and most of the Cabinet were in the room. One Secret Service agent was hit, saved by his vest. The suspect was in custody within four minutes.

Cole Allen left a manifesto, calling himself the "Friendly Federal Assassin." He had no criminal record and was named teacher of the month in December 2024.

This is the third assassination attempt on a sitting or former president in two years. Before Butler, Pennsylvania in 2024, the last attempt was 1981. The suspect's hotel room reportedly went unsearched the night before the event. A Daily Beast editor staying in the same hotel said nobody checked his luggage either.

Nobody died and the system worked, yet something is also clearly wrong. Both of those things are true.
