A Lifetime movie with a bigger budget and a slightly better ending — or a pulpy domestic thriller that earns its $400 million box office. Depends entirely on who you ask.
Paul Feig's adaptation of Freida McFadden's bestselling novel is slick, well-cast, and likely to frustrate anyone paying close attention. Sydney Sweeney plays Millie, a woman on parole who takes a live-in maid position with a wealthy Long Island family — and the twist arrives so early, so telegraphed, that the film spends most of its runtime waiting for you to catch up. Amanda Seyfried is the only real spark, chewing through Nina's erratic entitlement with evident relish. The finale delivers a satisfying enough pivot, but it requires Millie to spend two-thirds of the film as a passive doormat so the third act can feel like a surprise. If you switch your brain off and lean into the camp, it works. If you don't, you'll be bored.
The target audience loved it — and they're not wrong to. For everyone else, temper expectations. Now streaming on Starz and Hulu.
