IS DEATH ROW THE WAY TO GO?

On November 30, 2022, Tanner Horner delivered a Christmas present to a home in Paradise, Texas — a box of "You Can Be Anything" Barbies addressed to 7-year-old Athena Strand. He never left without her. Audio from inside his van captured over an hour of her begging to go home. This week, a Texas jury sentenced him to death after two and a half hours of deliberation.

Texas has executed more than 580 people since 1976, more than any other state. The US is one of the only developed nations still using capital punishment. Since 1973, at least 190 people on death row have been exonerated. Studies consistently show it costs more to execute someone than to imprison them for life, and that it falls disproportionately on poor defendants and people of color.

Most people who hear Athena's story want Horner to die. The debate isn't about him, but about whether the state should be the one to do it.

POSITION A: Keep the Death Penalty

Some crimes forfeit the right to a life sentence. Athena Strand was 7 years old, asked him to stop, and he kept going. A justice system that can only offer life in prison as its maximum response to that is warehousing monsters at taxpayer expense while their victims' families watch.
