YOUR BODY, THEIR CALL?

A UK mother recently found out that cadaver bone had been grafted into her daughter's mouth during cleft palate surgery — months after the procedure failed. Nobody told her. The consent form she signed made no reference to it. When she finally asked, the surgeon looked horrified going through the notes. Spire Hospital issued an apology.

This happens more than most people realize. Cadaver bone grafts — called allografts — are performed roughly 500,000 times a year in the US alone, making bone the second most transplanted tissue after blood. Dentists use it. Spine surgeons use it. Orthopedic surgeons use it. Consent forms often reference "donor tissue" in fine print. Sometimes surgeons decide in the moment. Most patients never find out.

The medical community calls it routine. Patients who find out after the fact call it something else.

Pick Your Side
POSITION A: Patients Should Always Know
Putting material from a deceased person into someone's body without their explicit knowledge is a fundamental violation of informed consent. "Standard practice" doesn't override a patient's right to know what's going inside them and say no. The fact that it's routine makes the lack of disclosure worse, not better.
POSITION B: Doctors Know Best
Cadaver bone grafts are sterilized, screened, and medically indistinguishable from synthetic alternatives in terms of risk. Surgeons use them because they produce the best outcomes, and requiring explicit pre-surgical consent for every routine material choice adds friction to procedures that already carry enough anxiety. Patients trust doctors to make good calls. This is one of them.
