Pickens Signs Franchise Tag, Cowboys Won’t Negotiate Further |
What Happened: Last offseason, the Dallas Cowboys took a chance on mercurial wide receiver George Pickens. They sent third- and fifth-round draft picks to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for Pickens and a sixth, and were rewarded handsomely: Pickens produced a Pro Bowl season, finishing eighth in the league in receptions (93) and third in receiving yards (1,429).
An A+ trade for Dallas, with the next logical step signing Pickens to a long-term deal, right? Not so fast. |

Why You Care: Unable to agree on a new deal with Pickens, the Cowboys instead slapped the franchise tag on the wideout. Pickens signed the tag yesterday, which locks him up for 2026 on a one-year deal worth $27.3 million.
No surprise there, that’s why the tag exists. To create leverage. But then Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones came out and said that while trading Pickens is off the table, the team also will not talk about a long-term deal with the player until after the season.
Dallas has played this game before and lost.
The Cowboys would probably prefer to see Pickens perform again before making a big financial commitment, see if he can replicate last season’s production. Which seems fair, but then, what happens if Pickens does deliver? Another top-10 season and Pickens is going to want to get paid accordingly. Sign him now and Dallas might be able to keep the salary down a bit.
But that’s not how Jerry and Stephen Jones have operated in the past. Just ask Dak Prescott: the Joneses rolled the dice with Prescott, using the franchise tag on him in the 2020 offseason. Prescott produced like a top-tier QB and as a result, got a contract that included what was at the time the largest signing bonus in NFL history. He was also able to negotiate a clause barring the Cowboys from using the franchise tag on him in the future, and so, when Prescott needed another new deal in 2024, Prescott extracted the highest per-year salary in NFL history.
Same deal with CeeDee Lamb and the Cowboys. Rather than pay Lamb when he was coming off three productive seasons with the team, the Jones boys dared Lamb to keep producing like a superstar. Lamb did just that, and before the 2024 season, he signed a contract that made him the second-highest-paid non-QB in NFL history.
Are the Cowboys traveling the same road with Pickens? Can they even do it if they want to? Prescott has the sixth-highest cap hit among QBs in 2026. Pickens ranks sixth among receivers, and Lamb is 11th. Dallas also will need to pay defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, for whom they surrendered first- and second-round picks. You don’t give up that kind of haul to watch a guy walk in free agency, and with most of his remaining salary not guaranteed, Williams will want to re-do his contract soon. That’s a lot of top-of-the-market deals Dallas is on the hook for.
So what’s the end game in Dallas? Pickens runs it back and then the Cowboys have to pay him like a WR1, in tandem with paying Lamb like a WR1? Lose Pickens in free agency for a compensatory pick? Try to trade him with little leverage over other teams? It’s a fine mess the Cowboys find themselves in. But it’s not an unfamiliar one, and it’s no one’s fault but their own. |

Things going from bad to worse in Boston.
The Red Sox, last in the AL East, bottom-five in MLB, and already down a manager after firing Alex Cora, now have to worry about their staff ace. Lefty Garrett Crochet hit the 15-day IL yesterday with shoulder inflammation. Not that Crochet has been any good in 2026, running a 6.30 ERA through six starts.
Crochet joins Sonny Gray on the IL, further compromising Boston’s pitching. Hell, it won’t matter who is managing the team if none of their starters can remain healthy. |
