Angels Fans Use New Trend To Let Owner Know He Sucks |
What Happened: A silly fan ritual is sweeping MLB stadiums across the nation. Can Los Angeles Angels fans use it to save their beloved team? |
Why You Care: In terms of stadium rituals, “tarps off” is definitely among the goofier. This one doesn’t need a long explainer — fans gather in a specific section of a stadium, take off their shirts, and wave them around their heads to…show team spirit? Inspire a rally? Who knows, but it’s harmless fun.
Fans in Los Angeles, however, are trying to weaponize the craze and use it to push out reviled owner Arte Moreno. Whereas most "tarps off" displays are fun and lighthearted, Angels fans are now mixing in pointed messages. Signs and loud chants of "sell the team" are accompanying the t-shirt waving. It's a smart gambit by fans — TV cameras want to catch the action and sound, so fans whip themselves into a frenzy on camera, then make their displeasure with Moreno known.
And holy crap do those fans have something to be steamed about. I can tell you all about how the Angels haven’t won the AL West since 2014 or even come in second since 2017, that they haven’t won a playoff game since 2009, that they haven’t had a winning season since 2015. It’s all true! But consider this: for six seasons, the Angels employed both Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. The team couldn’t muster a single winning season with two of the greatest baseball players of all time on the same roster over that span.
Unfortunately, Angels fans had a pretty good view of Athletics fans trying in vain to stop their team from leaving Oakland unsuccessfully. American fans by and large don't have much of a voice with team owners if the clubs are still making money. (And I promise you, the Angles make plenty of it.)
It's different elsewhere. A few years ago, a proposed European Super League soccer competition never got off the ground, largely because of negative fan reaction. We've seen direct action taken by fans force teams to re-think raising ticket prices. English soccer fans have organized themselves into a body of support that holds sway with club owners and has a seat with government officials. German football fans, by rule, control at least 50% plus one of a club's voting right, ensuring their voices are heard.
Those sorts of reforms aren’t coming for MLB teams. We have seen owners forced out after scandals — Donald Sterling had to sell the L.A. Clippers, Jerry Richardson lost the Carolina Panthers, and after years of resisting pressure, Dan Synder got 86’d from the owner’s box of Washington’s football team. But it’s not easy, and plenty of bad owners remain, despite fan unhappiness.
Will the Angels co-opting the "tarps off" movement move the needle? I hope so. With MLB and its players just starting up labor talks ahead of a potential work stoppage after the 2026 season, maybe other owners get fed up with the bad publicity and push Moreno to sell. I'm not optimistic that'll happen, but Angels fans need to keep up the pressure campaign. Let's see how long Moreno can ignore his own team's fanbase. |

Tarik Skubal and how much longer he’s in a Detroit Tigers uniform.
Skubal hasn’t pitched for the Tigers since April due to an elbow injury that ultimately required surgery. But his rehab seems to be on an accelerated timeline, meaning Skubal could see MLB action again before the trade deadline.
Keep in mind, he'd be returning to a Tigers team that resides in the bottom of the AL Central, having lost 17 of their last 21 games. Skubal is in the final year of his contract, and there's been little indication the Tigers are ready to pony up the amount of money it's going to take to keep the reigning back-to-back Cy Young winner.
If Skubal comes back and is his old self, the Tigers would have to consider trading the lefty, even if they are able to climb in the standings a bit between now and then. Missing the playoffs, then watching Skubal walk in free agency would be a complete disaster, and Detroit cannot let it play out that way. |
