| ARE TEACHERS PAID ENOUGH? |
The average public school teacher in America makes $74,495 a year. That number went up 3.5% last year. It sounds like progress until you adjust for inflation — at which point, teachers are earning nearly 5% less in real terms than they were a decade ago. A new teacher in Montana starts at $36,682. A new teacher in Nebraska starts at $39,561. Meanwhile, teachers earn about 27% less than other college-educated professionals with similar experience; a gap that has widened every year since 1996. Fewer people are entering the profession. Public school enrollment has dropped 3.6% since 2016 and is still falling. The counterargument is familiar: summers off, pensions, job security, union protections. The people making that argument rarely spend a Tuesday managing 30 ten-year-olds and then grading papers until midnight. The numbers are what they are. What you do with them is the debate. |

| POSITION A: Pay Them More |
| A country that pays its teachers less than it pays its middle managers has made a decision about what it values. Teacher shortages are real, classrooms are overcrowded, and talented people are choosing literally any other profession with their degree. If the pipeline keeps shrinking, the kids in those classrooms pay the price. |

|
| POSITION B: Money Isn't the Fix |
| States that have thrown money at teacher salaries haven't automatically seen better outcomes. Pay helps recruit, but it doesn't fix curriculum, discipline, administrative bloat, or the fact that public school enrollment is falling regardless of what teachers earn. Before writing bigger checks, it's worth asking what problem the check is actually solving. |
