Cavs Have No Answers As Knicks Go Up 2-0 |
What Happened: Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals was always going to tell us a lot about the Cleveland Cavaliers — how would this team rebound after allowing an excruciating comeback by the Knicks in Game 1? Would they finish the job on the road and steal a game before heading back to Ohio? Or allow the disappointment from the series opener to set in and fester?
We got our answer. |
Why You Care: Losing on the road in the playoffs is basically the norm, so it’s not shocking that this series heads to Cleveland with the Knicks up two games to zero. But the way they won last night really doesn’t bode well for Cleveland’s chances.
If you checked the box score of a Knicks win and saw a player who ended the game with 26 points while shooting nearly 50% from the field, including 5-of-11 from deep, you say “sure, no shame in getting torched by Jalen Brunson” or “Karl-Anthony Towns can go off at any moment.”
But giving up those numbers to Josh Hart?
To be fair, that was Cleveland's gamble on defense. Send resources to Brunson, and in turn, dare Hart to make them pay for that extra attention. In Game 1, Hart was a liability who ended up on the bench down the stretch. In Game 2, he was a sharpshooter who powered the Knicks to a third quarter 18-0 run that opened up the game in New York's favor. You can lose to Brunson, but if Hart is going to be this player all series, Cleveland won't have many options.
Speaking of options, Donovan Mitchell denies being hurt or tired, but he was on the bench for stretches last night and ended with a quiet 26 points. He got no help from the bench, as Max Strus and Sam Merrill put on a brick-laying exhibition. James Harden finished with a -22 +/- rating, the worst of any player.
Cleveland was down two games to the Detroit Pistons in the previous round and ended up advancing. Of course, that road takes its toll — Kenny Atkinson's team hasn't had consecutive days off in nearly a month. Mitchell says the team isn't tired, but several Cavs players lamented all the open looks the team couldn't convert. That sounds a lot like some dead legs out on the court.
If the Knicks don’t need Jalen Brunson to take control of the offense down the stretch and Towns can effectively get a quarter’s worth of rest while Josh Hart leads the charge, I’m not sure the Cavs have enough answers to make this series competitive. |

The fate of teams that canned their managers in season.
After horrid starts, the Red Sox and Phillies made moves in the dugout, with Alex Cora and Rob Thomson both being let go. I was skeptical in general, as managers get too much blame anyway. But things are working out!
Well, kinda. In Boston, the Red Sox are winning more games with Chad Tracy than they’re losing (12-10), which is better than the results Alex Cora was getting (10-17 before the ax dropped.) The Phillies have been scorching under Don Mattingly, posting a 16-6 record and climbing over .500 before dropping two straight.
The Sox won’t be able to get out of the brutal AL East, but in the NL, Philadelphia is sparking hope that the team can contend as planned this season despite the early-season speed bump. So, managers are underperforming teams, watch your backs! |
